Dr Cabot’s statement re the adverse publicity of Bio-identical Hormones.

Sydney Morning Herald Article “Cancer Alert as hand-made hormones tested on women”

The recent publicity about the “cancer – causing dangers of bio-identical HRT” is confusing and frightening for Australian women. The Herald should have interviewed more doctors and chemists who use this type of HRT – this way they would get a more balanced and helpful perspective from the voices of experience.

But of course – this does not sell newspapers!

How about a return on investment for your health?

Everybody is familiar with the concept of “Return on Investment” when it comes to money, but does the concept apply to your health? Absolutely!

Nobody has unlimited resources to apply to keeping healthy and every day we make decisions that affect our health for the short term and the long term. Just like investing, the secret is to do a little and often – and keep doing it and you will give your body every opportunity to function in optimal health. The important thing is to know what things to do and what things not to do – then make your plan and stick to it!

Michael Lawler – Lifestyle Therapies resident dietitian and exercise physiologist – says

“The top health risk factors in Australia today are poor diet and physical inactivity, closely followed by how we respond to stress. Just by making sure you are eating the right foods and maintaining a regular exercise regime dramatically decreases your chances of health problems now and later in life.”

Michael helps people achieve optimum and long term health through manageable improvements to food intake and levels of physical exercise.

He works with people from a very broad range from those just getting fit again after illness to top athletes needing peak performance to compete at the highest levels in their sport. Michael is clinically trained and is able to put together a nutritional and exercise program to suit each individual person’s needs.

Get better quicker

So many people have a small fall or accident and then suffer the pain for a long time afterwards. With Lifestyle Physiotherapy™ it doesn’t have to be this way! The following is a case study of a patient who did the right thing and came into LPT for physio treatment. He was treated by LPT physiotherapist Eric Huang.

Rotator Cuff Tendonitis – A Sore Shoulder
Robert** - a 45 year old man - came to see me with severe right shoulder pain after he had over-reached to grab a falling glass. He had not had any previous shoulder problems. He put ice on his shoulder straightaway but did not get very much relief so he booked in to see me at LPT.

Start With Ultrasound
When he came to see me Robert’s shoulder had very little movement in any direction and was painful and very tender. We started by using ultrasound to help decrease the swelling, soft tissue massage to improve circulation into the affected area and gave Robert a set of exercises to do – a gentle close-grip row and pull downs with a Thera-Band® exercise band.

Technically these exercises promote ‘tendon and rotator cuff activation’ and allow the other rotator cuff muscle that switches off when in pain to switch back on and support the shoulder through its movements.

After treatment Robert had most of his range of movement back in his shoulder. This was a vast improvement in the shoulder considering there were very little movement before treatment. He still had some pain throughout the movement but it was less intense.

Robert was then given gentle shoulder stretches and rotator cuff exercises to do at home. Next time I saw him there was full range of movement in the right shoulder and only a slight catch of pain. This again was a very favourable outcome and Robert was discharged after the third treatment when he had full pain-free range of movement.

Massage and Acupuncture
Massage alone would have helped Robert decrease the muscle spasm associated with the inflammation. However physiotherapy was a better choice for Robert with his injury as it not only emphasised managing his pain (with massage and joint mobilization techniques) but also targeted early activation of his stabilizing muscles.

This led to a decrease in pain as a result of taking the stress load off the inflamed tendon. At Lifestyle Therapies, massages are incorporated in the treatment by our massage therapists to complement the physiotherapy treatment specifically to allow more effective activation of the stabilizer muscles.

Massages and acupuncture are also good complementary treatments to further accelerate the recovery process. Without physiotherapy treatment this sort of condition can deteriorate to a chronic, stiff, painful shoulder. This in turn would cause arm activities such as lifting, housework and sport such as golf to be very painful and restrictive.

7 Daily Investments

Continuing our return on investment theme, LPT consultant naturopath Margaret Jasinska has drawn up a list of seven daily habits which will see you well on the way to rude health! Each and every day your habits and routine can either be promoting health, or undermining your health.

What you do each day has a great effect on how well you feel today, and also how long and healthy your life will likely be. Maintaining good health does not need to be time consuming. All it requires is some organization and forethought.

Is your lifestyle working for you or against you?

Below you will find some healthy habits that can go a long way to improving your health and extending your life. It should not take more than 20 minutes to incorporate all of these into your day:

  1. Eat a salad each day
  2. Make a raw vegetable juice
  3. Eat Omega 3 fats each day
  4. Take a mineral supplement
  5. Don’t forget to have a laugh

The Problem With Diets

The dieting industry has been around for a very long time and is unlikely to go away in a hurry. Everyone wants to look their best and be healthy – and a “diet” is seen as the way to do it.

Menopause-The Musical

But conventional diets do not work for a lot of people – having to continually measure what you are eating and resist the hunger pangs makes it a painful exercise. No wonder so many people end up putting more weight on after finishing a diet regime.

So What Is The Answer?
